About A Dozen Cousins
Founded by Ibraheem Basir
A Dozen Cousins makes shelf-stable pouches of seasoned beans, rice cooked in bone broth, quick marinades and rice seasoning sauces, all drawn from Creole, Caribbean and Latin American home cooking. Recipes lean on recognizable ingredients like beans, vegetables and avocado oil, with no artificial flavors. The brand was started by Ibraheem Basir, who grew up with these cuisines in his family kitchen, and its name nods to his daughter and her 11 cousins.

Answered by A Dozen Cousins.
Are the products organic?
They are not certified organic, but they are Non-GMO Project Verified.
How long do the beans keep?
Twelve months from production; the Best By date is on the back of each pouch. Once opened, they last up to seven days in the fridge.
How do they stay shelf-stable without added preservatives?
They are retorted: sealed airtight in the pouch and cooked inside it, much like canning.
Are the beans already cooked?
Yes, they are fully cooked and can be eaten straight from the pouch.
Can I heat the beans and bone broth rice on the stove?
Yes. Empty them into a saucepan and warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Can I freeze them?
Yes, but move the beans or rice into a freezer-safe container first rather than freezing the pouch.
Are the pouches BPA-free?
The pouches are PET plastic and free from BPA, BPS and BPF.
Are the beans halal?
They are not halal certified, but the beans contain no animal byproducts or alcohol.
