About Barnacle Foods

Founded by Matt and Lia, Co-founders

Barnacle Foods makes pantry foods built around Alaskan kelp, including bullwhip kelp hot sauces, kelp pickles, chili crisp, seasoning salts and kelp chocolate. Everything is made in Juneau, Alaska, by a small in-house team, with the aim of keeping the value of local ingredients in the state. The brand was started by Matt and Lia, both born and raised in Juneau, who grew up preserving the foods of their coast.

Good to know

Answered by Barnacle Foods.

  • Are the products vegan?

The kelp salsa, hot sauces and several seasonings are vegan. The shortbread, milk chocolate and ranch seasoning contain dairy, and the furikake and caviar contain fish. The pickles, jams and some seasonings use bone-char refined sugar, so they are not strictly vegan.

  • Can I eat these if I have a shellfish allergy?

No shellfish is added, but because the kelp comes from the ocean, trace contact with shellfish cannot be ruled out. Check with your doctor if your allergy is severe.

  • Where does the kelp come from?

The kelp is sourced from ocean farms and harvesters along the Alaskan coast.

  • How should I store the products?

Unopened products are shelf stable. Seasonings can stay out after opening; everything else should be refrigerated once opened.

  • Where are the products made?

All Barnacle products are made in Alaska by the company's own team.
