About Laird Superfood

Founded by Laird Hamilton, Co-founder

Laird Superfood makes plant-based coffees, coconut-based creamers, instant lattes, protein matcha and coconut water hydration mixes, many built around coconut and functional mushrooms like lion's mane and chaga. The brand grew out of big wave surfer Laird Hamilton's habit of adding plant-based fats to his morning coffee. He co-founded the company in 2015 with Paul Hodge, and his wife, volleyball legend Gabby Reece, helps shape products and ingredient standards.

Good to know

Answered by Laird Superfood.

  • When did Laird Superfood start?

Laird Hamilton spent years refining a morning coffee with plant-based fats like coconut oil, shared it with friends in the surf community, and the company was formed in 2015.

  • Are Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reece involved in the brand?

Yes. Laird is a co-founder, director and Chief Innovator involved in every product, and Gabby is Chief Brand Ambassador, working on product development and ingredient standards.

  • Where are ingredients sourced?

From around the world, with an emphasis on US sources and local suppliers, aiming for responsible and sustainable sourcing.

  • How is the coconut oil made?

Fresh coconuts are shelled and pared, the meat is ground and oven-dried, then pressed to extract the oil without solvents. Suppliers do not use monkey labor.

  • How should I store the products?

Reseal the bag and keep it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Powders should not go in the fridge or freezer, and are best used before the best-by date.

  • How much creamer should I use?

The recommended recipe is 2 tablespoons stirred or frothed into 8 to 12 ounces of hot coffee or tea.

  • Are products tested for heavy metals?

Yes. Ingredients and suppliers are vetted and tested for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, and finished products are tested on an ongoing basis.
