About Open Water

Founded by Nicole and Jess, Co-founders

Open Water packages purified still and sparkling water, with added electrolytes, in BPA-free aluminum cans and bottles as an alternative to plastic. The brand sources and packages its water as close to where it is sold as possible, uses mostly recycled aluminum, and puts part of every sale toward ocean conservation grants. It was launched in 2014 by recent college graduates Nicole and Jess, originally under the name Green Sheep.

Good to know

Answered by Open Water.

  • What is Open Water?

Bottled water packaged in aluminum bottles and cans instead of plastic. The company also measures and offsets its emissions and donates part of each sale to ocean conservation.

  • How is the water made?

It goes through a multistep purification and remineralization process, giving a crisp, smooth water with a neutral pH. It is produced as close to where it is consumed as possible.

  • Can I refill an Open Water bottle?

Yes. Wash it by hand with soap and warm water rather than in the dishwasher, and recycle it when you are done.

  • What is the shelf life?

Unopened, unflavored still water has an indefinite shelf life per the FDA. Open Water recommends a best-by of 2 years and storage between 33 and 93F.

  • Is the packaging made with recycled aluminum?

Yes, on average almost three quarters of the aluminum used is recycled.

  • Do the cans and bottles have liners?

Yes, like all metal packaging. Open Water uses a thin BPA-free liner that has been tested with the water and does not affect recyclability.

  • Why does it cost more than other bottled water?

Aluminum has a high raw value, so the bottles cost more to produce than plastic ones, which is also why they are recycled so often.
