About Spice House

Founded by Bill Sr. and Ruth Penzey, Founders

The Spice House sells spices, herbs, extracts and its own seasoning blends, from everyday staples like cinnamon and peppercorns to rarer finds such as makrut lime peel. The company works with a global network of growers and also makes collaboration blends with chefs Rodney Scott and Masaharu Morimoto. It was started in 1957 by Bill Sr. and Ruth Penzey, later run by their daughter Patty Erd and her husband Tom, and has shops in Chicago, Evanston, Naperville and Milwaukee.

Good to know

Answered by Spice House.

  • How should I store spices?

Keep them airtight and away from air, heat and light, such as in a dark cabinet, drawer, fridge or freezer. Avoid storing them above the stove.

  • Why do my spices clump?

No anti-caking agents are added, so slight clumping is normal. Break it up with a spoon or massage the bag; refrigeration helps keep ground spices free-flowing.

  • How are the spices packed?

In foil-sealed glass jars with metal caps, or resealable bags made of recycled kraft paper with a BPA-free laminate lining.

  • Do spices expire?

Most don't spoil but lose flavor over time. Use ground spices and blends within 12 to 18 months of opening; replace cheese blends, poppy seeds and sesame seeds yearly.

  • Are the spices kosher?

A wide selection is kosher-certified under the Kosher Supervisors of Wisconsin.

  • What is a Flatpack?

A resealable, stand-up refill bag holding about a half cup of spice, sized for refilling the brand's jars.
